Wednesday, Apr 08, 2009 08:25
The National Beer Wholesaler Association (NBWA) has launched AlcoholLawReview.com, an online discussion board which allows users to gather information about many of the most pertinent developments in alcohol regulation and litigation. The web site facilitates dialogue about current alcohol law cases, legal challenges and issues around the country.

"From local courts to the Supreme Court of the United States, alcohol continues to be a subject of legal debate," said NBWA president Craig Purser. "AlcoholLawReview.com is a place for all those interested in state-based alcohol regulation, which facilitates an orderly marketplace and works to ensure consumer safety, to come together to gain insight and discuss the best responses to legal challenges to the regulation set forth by the 21st Amendment."

The online forum, which is moderated by NBWA senior vice president, industry affairs and general counsel, Paul Pisano, will offer occasional guest columns featuring experts in alcohol law. The site will include alcohol law news updates and links to important legal developments.

Visit the site at www.alcohollawreview.com. For more information, visit

Cigarette Machines Disappearing From Bars Around the Country
By Barry Chandler
Tuesday, Apr 07, 2009 02:11
It seems like the familiar sight of a cigarette machine is disappearing bit by bit in bars across the country.

Prices for cigarettes sold through vending machines in Arkansas went up last month. In Northwest Arkansas, vending machine cigarettes now cost $7.50 to $8 per pack. Most of the old mechanical pull-slot National Vending machines have been replaced by snack machines that accept dollar bills and can be used to dispense cigarettes by the pack.

According to one vendor, the gross revenue of all cigarettes he sells for vending has dropped from $10,000 a week in the 1980s to about $500 now.

How to use party girls to sell more jaeger bombs
By Barry Chandler
Tuesday, Apr 07, 2009 01:40

On a typical night, one bar owner sells about 200 Jager Bombs in Omaha. The number doubles when the Jager girls are there. He requests the women during special events.

The effort has been successful enough that more brands are hiring similar spokeswomen.

"Lately, every product has a girl," Boyd said. "There used to be maybe two or three; now there's like 10."

The Miller Light Girls. The Red Bull Girls. And so forth.

Sometimes the party girls have their drawbacks.

Longtime bar owner Terry O'Halloran said the girls usually entice customers to sample their products, but often get patrons to switch from a product at full price to the discounted item, so it is not a huge benefit to the bar.

However, he said, "people do enjoy the swag they hand out."
